A community partnership soon will make students' walks and bike rides to and from school safer. This month, parents will receive safety tips, brochures and web site links to maps that suggest the safest routes to each MVWSD school.

This safe routes to school project is headed up by the City of Mountain View's Vehicle Emissions Reduction at School (VERBS) Program, a multi-faceted outreach effort that aims to reduce traffic, fuel consumption and air pollution, while promoting a healthy lifestyle for school children by encouraging walking and bicycle to school.

VERBS, funded by a Federal Grant provided by Santa Clara County Transportation Authority, prepared the suggested safe routes to school maps with input from the MVWSD, school principals, parents, Public Works and the Mountain View Police Department. Each route was walked and cycled multiple times during the same period students walk and bicycle to school in order to provide the best possible data for preparing the suggested routes. School meetings were held so that parents and school staff could review the routes and offer suggestions.

Additionally, VERBS will be working with the schools to plan bike rodeos and other activities to help children practice and refine their safety skills.

Maps will be posted on each school website, the District's website, and the City of Mountain View's website.

We encourage parents and children to explore biking and walking for commuting to and from school safely using these maps as tools. Parents should choose the most appropriate option based on their knowledge of the route and their child's level of skill and experience. Parents also should review the maps with their children and practice walking or bicycling the route until their children are familiar with the surroundings, the traffic patterns, traffic hazards and driver behaviors. Ideally, parents should walk or ride the route during the week at the arrival and departure times so as to have an accurate experience of the route.
