- What is the Bubb Walkathon & Silent Auction (WATSA)?

The Bubb Walkathon & Silent Auction is the most vital fundraiser of the year for Bubb Elementary School, last year bringing in over $110,000 or 75-90% of the money necessary to fund Bubb PTA programs. It is a huge, fun event where the entire school population gets involved, including students, parents, teachers, staff, and neighbors from the Cuesta Park community. The Walkathon & Silent Auction is a great way to build school spirit and have lots of fun together!

Signing laps- How are the Walkathon & Silent Auction proceeds used?

PProceeds from the Walkathon & Silent Auction are used to fund enrichment programs that would otherwise be cut due to declining State and local funding. Past years' proceeds have funded computers for the Computer Lab, iPads for innovative classroom instruction, interactive science programs, library books, classroom supplies, physical education, choir, field trips, assemblies, summer reading, emergency readiness supplies, parent education, and conflict resolution/anti-bullying programs. (For a more detailed list, please check out our Where Does the Money Go? page.) With everyone’s help at this year's WATSA, these important programs can continue.

- Do I need to donate to the Bubb PTA Walkathon & Silent Auction as well as MVEF?

Absolutely, because all our kids benefit greatly from the programs that BOTH organizations fund. The Mountain View Educational Foundation (MVEF) provides year-long art and music instruction as well as Playworks recess programs and hands-on science kits for every Bubb Cub. MVEF also grants technology gifts as their funds allow. MVEF provides these programs to all the elementary schools in the Mountain View Whisman School District, as well as other programs for our middle schools.

The Bubb PTA pays for a long list of enrichment programs and supplies that are specific to Bubb and have no other source of funding. Without your support of the Bubb Walkathon & Silent Auction, our kids will have no field trips, assemblies, or lunchtime classes and the Bubb Staff will have thousands of dollars less in books and teaching supplies.

So your support of both organizations is definitely needed to deliver a well-rounded education to our children.

walking- How does the Walkathon portion of the event work?

The Walkathon is a fun and exciting way for the students at Bubb to get involved and directly affect how much money is raised for their school. Before the event, kids gather pledges from family, friends and neighbors. The pledges can be a certain amount per lap or a flat amount. Then on the day of the event, the kids walk as many laps as they can. For all those per-lap pledges, the more the kids walk, the more money they raise for the school. After the event, the kids go back to their family, friends, and neighbors to tell them how many laps they walked and to collect pledges.

- Do the kids get prizes or incentives to walk laps?

Absolutely! We award prizes to every child who walks laps, no matter how many. There are also prizes for most laps walked, most money raised, classroom with most participants and more. Please see below for the complete list of this year’s incentive prizes. And remember, before you leave for the day, please check out at the Registration Desk so your child's laps can be recorded and so he/she can receive a participation prize.

Prizes will be awarded for:
  • Participating! (1 lap completed)
  • 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, and 75 laps completed
  • Students with most laps per classroom

  • Classroom per grade with most laps
  • Classroom with highest participation %
  • Pledge Form & pledges turned in by Nov 3, 2017

Walkathon crowd- How does the Silent Auction part of the event work?

While the kids are walking their laps, the grown-ups are encouraged to browse and bid on the items up for auction in the Silent Auction area. Items that have been donated by local businesses, Bubb families, or area neighbors will be on display. When you see something you’d like to have, sign the bid sheet for that item. When your item’s table closes, the highest bidder wins. So bid early and often! At the end of the night or the following morning, go by the auction check out room (The Multi-Use Room in front of the office near Hans Ave.) to pay for and collect your items. Then enjoy your winnings.

- What are Silent Auction parties?

In addition to physical items up for auction, we also “auction” off spots to themed parties. In most cases, the price for attending a particular party is fixed at a certain dollar amount, so the "winners" are determined by whoever signs up first. Silent Auction parties are fun dinners or activities that are hosted by one or more Bubb parents, teachers, families, classrooms, etc. A party can be for kids only, adults only, or families. Parties can be for 4 guests or 40 guests. Past themes have included Food and Wine Pairing, Mom's Martini Night, Dad's Billiards Night, Kinder-Only Bubble Party, Fireworks Ceramics Party, Holiday Cookie Decorating, etc.

Kids Walking- What kinds of things are available in the Silent Auction?

The Silent Auction offers a wide variety of items and experiences in all price ranges. There are kids' parties, camps and outings as well as fun things for parents such as winery tours, ethnic dinners, and dance parties. And Bubb’s Amazing Race for families is always a sell-out! There are items like locally made jewelry and kids’ lunchboxes. Donations come from Bubb families and many local businesses. If you are looking for a new restaurant or summer camp options, there will be several to bid on. We will make our Silent Auction catalog available in early October so you can plan your bidding. Remember to bid early and often!

- Are there other things to do at the WATSA besides walk laps and bid on auction items and parties?

WATSA crowdYes! You can purchase great food, Baskin-Robbins ice cream and various snacks and beverages for your late lunch, mid-afternoon snack, and dinner. You can purchase tasty treats at our Bake Sale (individual treats or entire cakes and pies to take home). You can buy handmade masterpieces at Craft Corner. You can buy a mystery bottle of wine from our Wine Cellar. You can purchase a Lucky Lollipop. You can purchase spirit T-shirts and other Bubb gear. Proceeds from the sale of all these items stay right at Bubb Elementary School. You can dance to some fantastic, energetic, walk-inspiring music, provided by our DJ!

- What's a Wine Cellar?

Our Wine Cellar (or Wine Wall) is a collection of donated favorite bottles of wine, with values starting at $15 per bottle. Hidden amongst these favorites will be one or more very special bottles of wine. Interested adults sign up to pay $25 at auction check-out and then draw a bottle number at random to take home one of these great bottles of wine, not knowing which they're going to get. It's like Lucky Lollipops for the grown-ups!

watsa2013_craftcorner.png- What's Craft Corner?

Craft Corner is a craft fair station where you can buy handmade items created by the Bubb community. We’ve invited people with a talent for knitting, crocheting, sewing, jewelry making, painting, woodworking, sculpting, gardening, etc. to donate the fruits of their labor. So be sure to check out Craft Corner and take home a masterpiece!

- What are Lucky Lollipops?

Lucky Lollipops are a huge hit with the kids! For a $10 donation, your child gets a cool lollipop AND a surprise toy/book/craft/gift that has been donated by a Bubb family. So be sure to have your kids hop in line for a great surprise while also helping to raise funds for Bubb.

- What if my child doesn't like/already has his Lucky Lollipop prize?

We don't offer refunds or exchanges on Lucky Lollipop prizes, as this is a fundraiser and they are LUCKY lollipops—you're trying your luck when you get a prize. So if you’re unhappy with your prize, you can choose to donate it back to the event, or trade with a friend. Keeping in mind that this is a fundraiser, some kids choose not to pick a prize at all. Leftover prizes will be donated to our Holiday Food & Toy Drive in December.

- What is the Family Giving Tree?

The Giving Tree

In September on the wall opposite the school office you'll see our Family Giving Tree. It's an easy way you can contribute to the Silent Auction. The apples on the tree are suggested donations and represent items we need for the Walkathon & Silent Auction – whether it’s an item to offer in the auction, some administrative supplies, or items needed to support events that our talented teachers offer in the Silent Auction. So feel free to pick an apple off the tree, then purchase the item requested or simply donate cash to cover that item. Place your donation in an envelope marked Giving Tree along with a completed Donation Form. Turn your envelope in to the basket in the School Office. For Family Giving Tree questions, please contact Erin Hung at ekdhung@gmail.com.

- When does the WATSA start?

The Walkathon portion of the event begins at dismissal time. So Kindergarteners can begin walking at 1:30 p.m., first and second graders at 2:35 p.m., and third, fourth & fifth graders at 2:40 p.m. At dismissal time, please go to your child's classroom to sign the Walkathon waiver and your teacher will automatically check in your child. If you're not picking up your child at dismissal, you’ll need to check in at the Registration Desk and sign a waiver before your child starts walking later in the day.

It’s important to note that some of our booths/attractions may not open until AFTER your child starts walking. For example, Lucky Lollipop sales, Silent Auction bidding, and the Bake Sale will begin at 3:00 p.m.

- May we go home for a while and then return to walk later in the day?

crowdAbsolutely! Just be sure to bring your child's T-shirt or lap card with you when you return to get credit for laps. And don't forget... before you leave for the day, please check out at the Registration Desk so your child's laps can be recorded and so he/she can receive a participation prize.

- When does the Walkathon & Silent Auction end?

The WATSA is officially over at 7 p.m. Before you leave, please make sure your child checks out at the Registration Desk for his/her laps to be counted and to receive his/her participation prize.

- Can we bring grandparents?

Yes! All family members, including grandparents, are welcome to attend and participate in all the day’s fundraising activities, like walking laps, purchasing food, baked goods, Lucky Lollipops, Craft Corner goods, Wine Cellar bottles, and Silent Auction items. If grandparents would like to bid on any auction items, please stop by the WATSA HQ to have bidder numbers created for them.

- Will any food be available at the event?

Two friendsYou bet! Walkers will receive free fruit and water at our replenishment stations. Bottled water and soft drinks will be available for purchase at our Cub Cafe. For dinner, you’ll have several options from our food vendors. For dessert, the Bake Sale will offer individual-serving treats, as well as whole cakes and pies to take home. And Baskin-Robbins will be on-site to provide hand-scooped ice cream cones.

- Why does our Walkathon & Silent Auction need Sponsors?

As you might imagine, putting on an event for over 1,000 people can cost a lot of money. Food, beverages, printing, office supplies, signage, kids' awards, etc. all must be purchased. Thankfully, several kind businesses from our community are willing to generously help us with these expenses.
