Principal’s Message
Dear Bubb Families,
I hope you had a lovely long weekend. It’s September already, and I see signs of changing seasons all around! This also means our Bubb Walkathon is drawing near!
Here is a video message from Captain Cub: Walkathon Message. Please mark your calendars for Friday September 27, 2024 from 3:00-6:30 pm. Our PTA will be sharing more information and it will be an exciting way to bring our community together.
I hope to see many of you tonight at 6:30pm, our first iReady Input session. Our second session will be Friday at 8:15am. Your input matters as we make a big site decision. Our PTA will also be present as a partner to gather information as well. If you are unable to attend either session, please email me your opinion: [email protected].
Please continue to look for ways to volunteer. Some classes still need class parents. Please connect with your student’s teacher if you are interested in helping! PTA is also looking to fill some positions, as well as seeking volunteers for Cornerstone and our Walkathon.
And be sure to tune in to our Board Meeting this Thursday as the topic of Social-Emotional Learning and Suicide Awareness Month will explain more about the initiatives we have planned for Mental Health. The Board will also go into more detail about what the role of our Counselor will be and what we at Bubb can do to support.
In Community,
Principal Jung

Commemoration of 9-11
Next week marks the 23rd Anniversary of the tragic events of 9/11. Bubb will be taking a moment of silence on Wednesday, September 11th in the morning. Remembering this event is only a small part of what it means to commemorate. To honor a memory of a tragic event, we must also practice bravery and compassion for others. In addition to our moment of silence, we will reflect on how we can do one of the following:
-
Be kind to someone today. On 9/11, people who didn’t even know one another reached out to pass along kindness and compassion.
-
Offer a helping hand. Thousands of firefighters, police officers, and even ordinary people risked their lives for others.
Get to know someone you don’t already know. Our school is made up of people who look differently than you and may think differently from you. This makes our school a better place. Our differences are our strengths.
School Site Council Vote
Please submit a school ballot by clicking here before 4pm on Wednesday, September 4, 2024.
ELAC
The ELAC shall be responsible for the following tasks:
-
Advising the principal and staff in the development of a site plan for English learners and submitting the plan to the School Site Council for consideration of inclusion in the School Plan for Student Achievement.
-
Assisting in the development of the schoolwide needs assessment.
-
Ways to make parents aware of the importance of regular school attendance
We are looking for one parent of an English Language Learner to join our committee. If you are interested, please contact Principal Jung: [email protected].
Picture Day
Lights! Camera! Action! Picture day is coming to Bubb Wednesday, September 18. Order flyers will be sent home with your student this Friday.
Reporting absences
To report an absence, call the office at (650) 526-3480 and press 2, or email [email protected]. Provide the following information: date of absence, student’s name, room number, reason for absence, and name and relationship of the person reporting the absence. It is very important, for safety reasons, that we know the reason why a student is not present at school.
Early Pick Up
If your child must leave early, an adult must come to the office and sign the student out. For security reasons, no one is allowed to go to the classroom to pick up students. The office will call the classroom to have the child come up to the office. Students are released only to persons on the emergency card, unless we have a written note or a phone call from a parent whom we can identify. Kindergarten parents must notify the teacher if there is a change in the pickup person.
Visitors to Campus
Visitors to campus during the school day must check in at the front office by presenting an ID (driver’s license, State ID card, or passport) which will be scanned upon entry. Regular volunteers who have a district issue volunteer badge can scan in at the kiosk in the office. All visitors need to wear a visitor or volunteer badge during their visit. Please be sure to allow time to check in, especially for concerts or scheduled volunteer events.

Better Together: September
A classroom is more than just four walls and desks - it's a vibrant community where students learn, grow, and support each other. #BetterTogether in September highlights how each student contributes their unique talents and perspectives to create a rich learning environment. September 15th also marks the beginning of Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month. Look out for some additional content mid-month. For more information about Better Together, visit mvwsd.org/BetterTogetherMVWSD.
Parent University: The Science of Reading, Part 1 of 2
Date and Time: September 10, 2024, 5:30-7:00 pm Registration Link: mvw.sd/pu091024r
Reading is fundamental. But how do we best teach children to do it? And how do we support them at home? In this two-part series, we will uncover the “Science of Reading”, how our new district curriculum is based on this science, and how parents can translate the science into practical routines and strategies at home.
About the speaker: Dr. Cyndee Nguyen is MVWSD’s Director of Early Literacy. She leads district efforts to ensure that all students, especially those of early elementary age, develop into capable and confident readers. Previously, Dr. Nguyen was a primary grade teacher and the principal of Bubb Elementary School.
To submit questions prior to the event, go to mvw.sd/questions. We will do our best to address your question during the session.
MVEF & PTA/PACT: Why should we donate to both?
Last week at Back to School Night we heard requests for support from our school’s PTA/PACT and MVEF leaders.
Our annual donations to each organization support students in different ways:
-
MVEF provides essential programs at every school in MVWSD for all students:
CSMA Art & Music classes, Living Classroom Environmental Science classes, environmental field trips in grades 4-5; plus two middle school ELA teachers reducing class sizes by >20%, supplemental support for clubs, sports, and instruments in grades 6-8.
-
PTA/PACT is a “hyper-local” advocacy team of volunteers that support each school site in customized ways to improve family engagement and support classrooms within that school community.
Both MVEF and PTA are 501(c)3 charitable organizations and both rely on tax-deductible donations from families and matching contributions from employers and other organizations. You can donate to MVEF and learn more here and find your PTA donation link here.

Let’s Talk About Sex: How a New Generation Navigates Hookups, Porn, Love & Consent
Tuesday, September 17, 2024, 7PM, Los Altos High School - Eagle Theater
In this talk, Orenstein combines her research with voices of both boys and girls (as well as those between or beyond genders), to discuss the impact on high school and college students’ sexual scripts of mainstream media, social media and porn; hookup culture; changing expectations around consent; the politics of sexual pleasure; the diversity of sexual orientations; gendered power dynamics. With humor and compassion, she separates myth from reality, ultimately giving parents, educators and young people the conversational tools they need to ensure safe, pleasurable, mutually satisfying sexual encounters and intimate relationships. Project Cornerstone in 2024-25
YMCA Project Cornerstone is a community initiative with the mission to create an environment where adults support and value all youth so they grow up feeling valued, respected, and known. We had a great year last year, with monthly Project Cornerstone lessons in all classrooms, led by a committed team of parent volunteer readers. We are looking forward to a new year of great books and lessons - the theme for next year is Growing Upstanders. Reader sign ups are open until Friday 8/23! The sign up on the Bubb PTA website.
Reader sign ups will be limited to two readers per classroom. If there are more than two readers signed up, we will offer you the opportunity to read in another room, or allocate readers using a lottery for that room. Thank you for your support of the Project Cornerstone program at Bubb, helping us to create a positive school climate for all our kids.
