March 30, 2022 Bulletin

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE:

Dear Families,

Thank you for your cooperation and flexibility with all of the changes this school year.  Here are a few updates:

Masking: This week MVWSD moved to strongly recommended for masking indoors and outdoors.  In general, students have been respectful of other students’ and staff members’ masking choices.  For issues like masking, students often echo the discourse that they hear at home.  Thank you for reinforcing inclusive messages.  Here's a resource for how to be an upstander and respectfully speak up and speak out.

Student Drop off and Pick Up:  For student security and safety, families will continue to drop off and pick up at the gates.  This allows staff to verify that students have been picked up by an authorized adult.  Campus will reopen for families after all students have been accounted for--approximately 15 minutes after last dismissal.  It is still expected that all students are picked up or walk/bike home immediately after school.  Students who do return to campus must be closely supervised by an adult.  After school programs (YMCA and Right at School) have priority of campus space.  That means if YMCA or RAS are using the playground or the tables, other students and families must leave that space.  Also, please do respect staff and their preparation time.  They have a lot to do to get ready for the next day of learning!

School lunch pick up in the MUR (masks required):  Starting Monday, students will be picking up their school meal from the MUR, allowing for some food choice and less food waste.  Students entering the MUR MUST wear a mask.  Please help your child remember to pack a mask each day if they are planning on getting school meals.  All students will continue to eat outside.

Statewide Assessments (grades 3-5):  Our upper grade students and teachers have been working hard all year to master their grade level standards.  Next month, they will be taking the annual statewide assessments.  They have been taking practice and training tests to learn how to use the online testing interface.  3rd and 4th graders will test before AM recess 4/25-5/6, while the 5th graders will test before AM recess 4/25-5/13.  Please avoid scheduling appointments during these times.

Allies Against Racism: Have you been completing the online modules with your children via their Clever account?  Families have reported that these videos are sparking great conversations in their families.  We are having our second and final live discussion on Wednesday, April 6th at 6pm.  Please join us!  (Zoom link)

Principal’s Coffee: Please join me Thursday 4/7 @ 9am  (Zoom link).  We will be reviewing these updates and going over the statewide standardized tests.  We will also have lots of time for questions.

Reporting absences

To report an absence, call the office at (650) 526-3480 and press 2, or email [email protected].  Provide the following information: date of absence, student’s name, room number, reason for absence, and name and relationship of the person reporting the absence. It is very important, for safety reasons, that we know the reason why a student is not present at school.

COVID update: Masking, other protocols changing on March 28

MVWSD will further loosen restrictions due to changing state and county guidance. Please see the attached flyer for the highlights of changes beginning March 28. Both outdoor and indoor masking is strongly recommended (no longer required) for students and staff. Exceptions: Masks are required on buses for all, indoors for volunteers and preschoolers, and unvaccinated persons (including adults without a booster) must wear a mask for 10 days after exposure to a positive case. Masks are required indoors for sports and performing arts spectators, regardless of vaccination status.

Speaking respectfully about mask choices

As mask mandates change at MVWSD, it is important to respect the decisions of individuals and families as they choose to mask or not mask at school. Staff members will support students with respectful conversations on campus. We encourage you to talk with your children about your family’s choices, and about communicating empathy and understanding for others’ choices. For tips on how students can respectfully speak up and speak out, see this helpful infographic. We know our students will be upstanders and take care of each other!
