October 6, 2021 Bulletin (English)

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE:
Dear Families,

September 15-October 15 is Latinx Heritage Month.  Students have been learning about the contributions and histories of Latinx people in their classrooms and through our morning meetings.  As we celebrate and learn this month, we are keeping the following points in mind (adapted from Teaching for Change):

*There is a tendency to treat all Latinos as immigrants, when in reality Latinos have been on this land since before the pilgrims. There is also great diversity among Latinos in terms of ethnic heritage, religion, class, national origin, language, political perspectives, and traditions. There are Latinos of African, European, indigenous, and Asian heritage.

*Children are given the false impression that great people make history all on their own. Instead of serving as an inspiration, the heroes are portrayed as superhuman. Children often cannot picture themselves in this history. Instead, we can teach about organized movements for change.

When we learned about Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta, we acknowledged them as remarkable leaders while also reflecting on the power and contributions of the farmworkers and consumers who joined their movement.  We were lucky to have Dolores Huerta join us at MVWSD a few years ago for a Parent University event, where she talked about the importance of education.  You might want to check out the recording with your child.

Some updates and reminders:

*Please help us vote for our School Site Council members.  Our School Site Council consists of 5 parents or community members, the principal, 3 teachers, and 1 non-teaching staff member.  Parents and community members were given the opportunity to self-nominate through announcements in our Bubb Bulletin, at Principal’s Coffees, and Back to School Night from April 2021 through August 2021.  We have one parent who is completing their second year of a two year term, and 4 parents who have self-nominated to begin their terms this school year.  Please take a moment to formally elect these parents for School Site Council by filling out the ballot online (or pick up a paper ballot in the office).

*No School for students 10/11-10/12.  Teachers will be reviewing student data, creating action plans, and planning for social emotional learning.

*Picture Day retakes on 10/13.  Please let your child know if you’d like them to retake their pictures.  (If you have a younger or forgetful child, you could let your child’s teacher know as well.)

*Principal’s Coffee: Friday 10/22 @ 9:00 am.  At parents’ requests, we will try a morning time for this month’s principal’s coffee!  I’ll give a quick update on what’s happening at Bubb, provide information about emergency preparedness and procedures, and leave time for questions and answers.  Zoom link.  In addition to these coffees, I’m also available to chat on the phone or through email, or at drop off or pick up at the car circle.

In partnership,

Principal Cyndee

An adult will escort those students from their classroom to the MUR where the photographer will be set up.

Disaster Preparedness: Make a Plan

It’s important to take time to prepare for community disasters and emergencies. Asking a few questions of yourself will help guide the creation of an emergency plan:

1-What is my shelter plan?
2-
What is my evacuation route?
3-
What is my family/household communication plan? 4-How will I receive emergency alerts and warnings? 5-Have I updated my emergency plans due to COVID-19?
As you make your emergency plan, be sure to stay informed. Getting verified information from trusted sources is extremely important before, during, and after an event or emergency. Sign up to get free text or email alerts from AlertSCC, the County of Santa Clara’s official emergency alert and warning system.

Planning for the unexpected begins with the whole family and should be a household conversation. Ready.gov provides age-appropriate tools for parents and teachers to teach emergency preparedness to both kids and teenagers.
