March 2, 2022 Bulletin

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE:

Dear Families,

We hope you had a chance to recharge over the break.  Coming back from a break marks a natural opportunity to review norms and expectations.  We are reviewing and reinforcing the BUBB way with our students this week, especially around recess and lunch expectations.  Grown-ups, please remember to follow the BUBB way as well during drop off and pick up:

Be safe:

*If driving to campus, only drop off or pick up in the car circle.  Do NOT let your child exit or enter your car on the street.  A safer option is to park a block away from campus and walk in together.

*Give bicyclists space.  The law requires that you provide at least 3 feet of distance between the car and the bicyclist.

*If walking to campus, only cross the street at the crosswalks.  If crossing on Hans Ave, wait for Ms. Marcia to help you cross.  If crossing on Barbara, look both ways and make eye contact with drivers before crossing.

Use respect:

*Exit quickly if using the car circle and pull all the way forward.

*Don’t enter the car circle until your child’s dismissal time.  Parents of 4th and 5th graders who wait in the car circle block traffic and the school buses on Hans Ave.  Beginning next week, all drivers using the car circle will be given a color coded pass.  Drivers picking up 4th and 5th graders will NOT be allowed in the car circle before 2:40.

Be responsible:

*Pay attention to our school buses.  Do not block them in.  When you see them signaling to get out, let them pass.  They are on a tight schedule to pick up other students from different schools.

Be an upstander:

*Have patience and grace.  We are all trying to get our kids to school and then get to work.  Smile and say hello--you might help turn someone’s day around!

Thank you for doing your part to keep our community safe.  Thank you for modeling the BUBB way for our students as well.

In partnership,

Principal Cyndee

SCHOOL NEWS

Upload your child’s completed vaccine card

Many of our younger students are getting their 2nd COVID vaccine shot this week. When your child's vaccine card has their second shot listed, please upload a copy to Powerschool. Vaccine cards will be referred to in the case of a positive COVID exposure for your student, and MVWSD needs accurate data for decisions about COVID protocols. Click here for a video that shows you how to upload documents: https://vimeo.com/606954357.  If you need assistance, contact Mr. Person in the main office, [email protected] .  Thank you in advance for uploading your documents now!

Reporting absences

To report an absence, call the office at (650) 526-3480 and press 2, or email [email protected].  Provide the following information: date of absence, student’s name, room number, reason for absence, and name and relationship of the person reporting the absence. It is very important, for safety reasons, that we know the reason why a student is not present at school.

DISTRICT NEWS

No Open House events this year

Our schools will not be holding Open House events on March 30 and 31, as we traditionally do. COVID precautions prevent us from bringing many additional people on site, and we are not able to provide a robust virtual Open House experience.

We certainly will miss seeing all of the amazing work from our students and teachers, and look forward to a time we can gather to celebrate students’ work.

Health and Wellness Parenting Tip: Calming Your Mind

When we feel stressed, our minds tend to jump to the past (I should have...) or to the future (What if...?). The problem is that we cannot change the past nor control the future. Focusing on the present can help us take control of our current situation and help us feel calmer and more relaxed.

Watch this video to learn more about how mindfulness can help you (or your child) be more present and relaxed.

To calm your (or your child’s) mind:

  1. Look around you, and name five things you see. Pick one object, and describe what it looks like, what color, what size, and what shape it is.

  2. Look for four things you can touch. Pick one of those items to touch, and describe how it feels.

  3. Name three things that you can hear. At first, it might seem that there is not much to hear, but listen carefully. Focus on one sound, and describe it.

  4. Look for two things you can smell. Focus on one smell, and describe it.

  5. Find one thing you can taste. Focus on the taste and describe it.

You can repeat these steps every time you feel stressed to come back to the present moment.
