March 16, 2022 Bulletin

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE:

Dear Families,

As you have likely already heard, we have had very few positive COVID test pools recently.  Thank you for doing your part to keep our students and community safe!  This week, we have updated our masking protocols.  Outdoor masking is now highly recommended, but not required.  In this week’s morning meeting, I told students about this change in protocol.  Some highlights from that messaging:

*Students need to talk to their caregivers/families about what they would like them to do at school.  Their grown ups would let them know if it was OK to take the mask off during outdoor time (recess, lunch, PE).

*If students’ families are OK with taking the mask off outdoors, then students need to practice what to do with their masks so they stay clean and available for masking up inside.  Good ideas were to put on your wrist or elbow, in your pocket, in your backpack.  Bad ideas were to leave on the floor or to leave on your desk.

*Keep an extra mask or two in the backpack.

*Be kind and respect others. There is no need to comment or question another student’s outdoor masking choice. Outdoors, we will do what works for our families and respect everyone else’s choices.  We will also be kind and respectful when we put our masks on when we return to class indoors.

We continue with our other COVID mitigation strategies of indoor masking, increased hand washing and sanitizing, increased air circulation and filtration, and frequent cleaning of high traffic and high touch areas. Thank you for your continued support!

Allies Against Racism Family Education Program

I strongly encourage all families to participate in our Allies Against Racism program.  There are 3 components of the program: asynchronous videos that families access through Clever, Livestream discussions on 3/23 and 4/6 (Zoom link), and an optional workbook to complete.  You can pick these workbooks up from the front of the office or print them out here.  Families who attend both livestream discussions will be entered into a drawing for a gift card!

Thank you for supporting our efforts to create inclusive spaces for all students and families!

Have a wonderful week!

In partnership,

Principal Cyndee

When women succeed, we all succeed. The same can be said for any of our community members who have felt the sting of marginalization or oppression. On International Women’s Day, let us appreciate all of the women and girls in our lives and the many intersecting identities that make them who they are. Let us never stop fighting for a world that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive. After all, we are #BetterTogether. The Talk: “The Culture of Success” on Mar. 16th

“Pull yourself up by your bootstraps,” is a common phrase used in American political discourse, particularly around self-reliance and emotional resilience. Today’s culture of success was built upon our ideas, beliefs, and values. However, the pandemic and resulting shifts in our daily lives have called us to reflect on our foundational beliefs about the success and emotional resilience of our children. Let's talk about it.

You are cordially invited to MVWSD’s next Roundtable event: “The Talk: The Culture of Success – Our Beliefs About Success and Emotional Resilience” on Wednesday, March 16 from 6:00 – 7:00 pm. Register at: http://mvw.sd/talk316.

Health and Wellness Parenting Tip: Belly Breathing

Our mood is influenced by physical sensations in our body. When we feel stressed, we tend to take quick and shallow breaths. By taking slow and deep breaths, we can signal our body to relax.

Watch this video to learn more about how belly breathing can help your child (or you) feel more relaxed.

To belly breathe:

  1. Choose a comfortable position, such as sitting on a chair or laying on your back.

  2. Place one hand on your belly.

  3. Take a deep breath in through your nose while you count to four. As you breathe in, your belly should rise.

  4. Hold your breath while you count to five.

  5. Breathe out through your mouth while you count to six. As you breathe out, your belly should flatten.

You may need to repeat these steps for 5-10 minutes before you start to feel relaxed. By practicing these steps, you can learn to relax after stressful situations.
