PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Families,

For this month’s Project Cornerstone lesson, students will be learning about empathy (“how it feels to walk in someone else’s shoes”) and discussing the importance of tolerance and acceptance of differences as they read about Ruby Bridges, the first African-American child to desegregate her elementary school in New Orleans in 1960.  One of my most memorable experiences was in 2017 when I got to accompany a group of our 5th graders to hear Ms. Bridges speak.

Here is how Ms. Bridges described her first days at her new school: When she walked to school on her first day, she thought it was like Mardi Gras because there were so many people around.  The innocence of being a child protected her--she did not know then that all the people around were protestors and federal marshals.  At recess, a boy told her, “My mom said not to play with you because you are a n---.”  That is when Ms. Bridges realized that it wasn’t Mardi Gras.  Ms. Bridges then said something that I didn’t expect: What the boy said and did made sense to her.  Her feelings were hurt, but she was not angry.  It was his mom who told him not to play with her and she could understand that.  She would have obeyed her parents also.

Even though this anecdote happened in 1960, things like this still happen today, even in wonderfully diverse communities like Bubb and Mountain View.  Ms. Bridges’s message to young people: racism has no place in your hearts and minds, give people a chance, you will need each other one day.  Ms. Bridges’s message to adults: No child is born prejudiced, ideas are learned.  Sometimes we model bias and prejudice overtly, as in the situation with the mom telling her son not to play with Ruby.  Oftentimes, though, it is in much more subtle ways.  What does our family’s social circle look like?  How do I discuss current events and issues of race with my kids?  When I see something that is not right, do I say or do something or do I walk away?  Confronting our own biases is hard, but absolutely necessary if we want our children to truly live in an equitable society.  Bubb staff has been participating in a series of seminars on equity and anti-racist teaching.  Several staff members are engaging in book studies of Kendi’s How to Be an Antiracist and Diangelo’s White Fragility.  The MVLA Speaker Series is hosting Ms. Nicole Lee next week.  She will be presenting “Raising Antiracist Kids: The Power of Intentional Conversations about Race.”  Click here for more information.   As I work towards being a better version of myself and a better model for kids, I remember Maya Angelou: “I did then what I knew how to do.  Now that I know better, I do better.”

Black History Month

Even before children can talk, they are learning about the world and about race through the words and actions of others. Parents, teachers, and caregivers have the unique opportunity to frame their child's first attempts to understand and talk about race. Talking about race matters because (1) everyone has a racialized identity, (2) racialized identity significantly impacts a person's life, and (3) race is a defining social construct in America.

This Black History Month, use the Better Together infographic to begin racially-focused conversations with children acknowledging that conversations about race will look different for each family and classroom and there is no single way to talk to children about race. Have honest conversations with your students about the history of privilege and oppression as it relates to Black History and, where appropriate, connect this to local community and larger global issues.

Together, we can explore Black History. Together, we can become anti-racist.

MENSAJE DE LA DIRECTORA

_______________________________________________________________

Estimadas familias,

Juntos podemos volvernos antirracistas.
