Dear Families,

Thank you for another great week of Distance Learning!  Your words of encouragement to Bubb teachers and staff have meant so much.  We appreciate your partnership and support.

With the lines blurred between home and school, many families are wondering what their role is during distance learning.  Bubb families know that we really value building a growth mindset.  Part of building that growth mindset is allowing for opportunities for a productive struggle, which includes allowing students to problem solve using the tools that they have and to occasionally make mistakes from which they can learn.  How can you support this growth mindset at home?

*Allow your child to ask the teacher questions.  I have noticed when joining Zoom classes that parents have asked teachers questions while the teacher is instructing.  Not only is this disruptive to the class, but it also robs the child the opportunity to problem solve and ask questions themselves.  In face to face school, there would have been times where your child was confused about the skill or instructions and they would have learned to ask a classmate or ask a teacher for help.

*Give your child space to practice on their own.  Resist the urge to “help” your child make their work look perfect.  For new skills, our teaching methodology is a gradual release of responsibility: the teacher models, the teacher and students practice together, students practice with some help, and then students practice on their own.  When it’s time for kids to work on their own or with a classmate in a breakout room, let them try it!  A parent shared last week that he was pleasantly surprised that his Kindergartener really could navigate Seesaw following the teacher’s directions.

*Allow for students to collaborate and work with each other while they are in breakout rooms. Sometimes the breakout rooms are to support peer to peer learning; sometimes they are a space for students to work independently with a peer in case they have a quick question.  For student safety and privacy, do not interact with students during breakout rooms.

*Set up a learning space with your child.  If they are working in a common space like the kitchen table, give them a box to keep their school supplies and workbooks in.  After that, let them manage their supplies.  A mother shared with me last week, “I had a moment of revelation.  Why was I stopping my work to get a pencil for my kid?  In face to face school, she would have gotten the pencil herself!  She is perfectly capable of getting that pencil!”

*Remind your child about being responsible on Zoom.  We have taught and rehearsed with students how to use the mute and unmute buttons responsibly.  Many classes have practiced how to use the chat feature responsibly and have also learned that we auto-save all of our Chats so there is a permanent transcript of what they write.  You can also monitor your child’s online activity using Securly.  Go to the Securly website and click “get instant access.”  Use the email address that you have on file with the school to get a code.

*If you have a nanny or other adults supporting you at home, please pass this information on to them as well.  Thank you for supporting your child with developing their growth mindset!

Some quick updates and reminders:

*We are looking for parent members for our English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC).  Time commitment is no more than an hour a month, after school hours.  One member of the committee will also attend the monthly District DELAC meeting as Bubb’s representative.  ELAC provides input on school programs and supports for English Language Learners and their families.  We would like to have our first meeting in two weeks, so let me know ASAP if you can join!

*Every Friday we update our weekly Dashboard of classroom schedules and our progress on our Reopening Checklist.  Both are found on our school website.

*Students are taking the iReady Reading and Math diagnostic assessments beginning tomorrow.  Students need to use a district Chromebook during the assessment and will need to have their camera on for the duration of the assessment.

Attendance Update

Due to new state guidance, beginning Sept 8, there will be some changes to how our school is required to count and monitor student attendance.

It’s important to know that school attendance during distance learning is mandatory. If your student will be absent, please report it by calling or emailing us as soon as possible. If your child is having difficulty with distance learning, please let us know. We want to help.

Changes to attendance monitoring beginning Sept 8:

• Elementary teachers will check in with students at the beginning of the day. Attendance will be taken at the end of the day every day, including Wednesdays. For middle school students, attendance is taken every period of the day, including Wednesdays.

• Students will no longer get a separate participation grade in Google Classroom. Attendance and participation scores are now combined and can be viewed by parents in Powerschool under “attendance history.”

• If you don’t report your student’s absence, your school will be calling you to determine the reason for the absence.

While MVWSD is distance learning due to COVID-19, we are providing meals to students.

Free and reduced price meals (grab and go during MVWSD Distance Learning) are available at school sites for students who have renewed their applications for 2020-21 for free and reduced price meals and the National School Lunch program. Full price meals will be available for students who have paid in advance online or have sent a check (including child’s school, child’s name, grade, teacher) to Food Service, Crittenden Middle School, 1701 Rock St., Mountain View, CA 94043.

MVWSD provides a tool that allows parents to be aware of their students' online activities and to help keep them safe on their school-issued devices. Securly allows you to see what choices your student is making online while at home so that you will be alerted to potential issues and can guide your student. Please note: Securly is for school-issued devices only. Public hearing on Sept. 17: Sufficient instructional materials

A public hearing will be held in order to comply with Ed Code section 60119 on September 17, 2020 to detail the extent to which text books and instructional materials were provided to all students, including English Learners.

The definition of “sufficient textbooks or instructional materials” means that each pupil has textbooks or instructional materials, or both to use in class and to take home in each of the following subjects:
• Mathematics
• Science
• History/Social Science
• Language Arts
The public hearing on September 17, 2020 at 7:00pm will be held during the regular meeting of the Board of Trustees.  MV Parent U on Sept. 9: Increasing Student Engagement with Literacy

Join us on Wednesday, September 9 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. for our next Parent University event: Increasing Student Engagement with Literacy from Home.

MVWSD Instructional Coaches Karen Gordon and Natalie Gallagher will share several resourceful strategies for supporting reading, writing, listening, and speaking at home during distance learning:

• Easy activities to boost your child's reading engagement 
• Creative ways to encourage and support writing using four text types (expository/informative, narrative, opinion, argumentative)
• Fostering listening skills to be able to extract key information
• Cultivating speaking skills using academic vocabulary

  ELPAC Language Assessment
  Mountain View is a beautifully diverse place where hundreds of languages are spoken. In some instances, children from households where a non-English language is spoken need additional help at school to become fluent in English. To make sure that we identify all such children, all public school districts in California are required to do an initial language assessment called the Initial ELPAC. (English Learner Performance Assessment of California).
  
  A letter was sent out last week to all families with children who meet the criteria for the Initial ELPAC. The letter describes the rationale and details for the assessment and invites families to follow up with any questions they may have. Additionally, the following link is a helpful resource for parents/guardians to understand the test better and to help prepare their children. 
  
  A Parent Guide to Understanding ELPAC Initial English(also contains information about the Summative ELPAC, which is a similar test at the end of the school year.)
  
  We understand that the beginning of the school year is a busy time, especially under these extraordinary circumstances. Based on current guidance from the California Department of Education, the Initial ELPAC this fall will be administered remotely. Details to come. Welcome from Project Cornerstone!

TheProject CornerstoneProgram is a volunteer led, literature-based program addressing important issues like respect, tolerance, honesty, peaceful conflict resolution, taking a stand against bullying behaviors and refusing to participate in gossip. This year, while our method of delivery will look a little different, we are still planning lessons and volunteer parent engagement, helping to connect kids across the whole school to these impactful ideas in meaningful ways.

We still urgently need parent readers in Room 8, Room 13, and Rooms 22A/C. We want to make every Bubb cub feel valued, empowered, respected and loved. Debido a la nueva guía estatal, a partir del 8 de septiembre, habrá algunos cambios en la forma en que nuestra escuela debe contar y monitorear la asistencia de los estudiantes.

Es importante saber que la asistencia a la escuela durante el aprendizaje a distancia es obligatoria. Si su estudiante estará ausente, infórmelo llamándonos o enviándonos un correo electrónico lo antes posible. Si su hijo tiene dificultades con el aprendizaje a distancia, háganoslo saber. Queremos ayudar.

Cambios en el monitoreo de asistencia a partir del 8 de septiembre:

• Los maestros de primaria se comunicarán con los estudiantes al comienzo del día. La asistencia se tomará al final del día todos los días, incluidos los miércoles. Para los estudiantes de la escuela intermedia, la asistencia se toma en todos los períodos del día, incluidos los miércoles.

Audiencia pública el 17 de septiembre: materiales de instrucción suficientes

  Evaluación del idioma ELPAC 
  Mountain View es un lugar maravillosamente diverso donde se hablan cientos de idiomas. En algunos casos, los niños de hogares donde se habla un idioma que no es el inglés necesitan ayuda adicional en la escuela para dominar el inglés.   Se envió una carta la semana pasada a todas las familias con niños que cumplen con los criterios para el ELPAC inicial. La carta describe la justificación y los detalles de la evaluación e invita a las familias a hacer un seguimiento con cualquier pregunta que puedan tener. Además, el siguiente enlace es un recurso útil para que los padres / tutores entiendan mejor la prueba y ayuden a preparar a sus hijos. 
  
  Una guía para padres para comprender el inglés inicial de ELPAC(también contiene información sobre ELPAC sumativo, que es una prueba similar al final del año escolar).
  
  Entendemos que el comienzo del año escolar es un momento de mucho trabajo, especialmente en estas circunstancias extraordinarias. Según la orientación actual del Departamento de Educación de California, el ELPAC inicial de este otoño se administrará de forma remotamente/a distancia. Detalles por venir.   Todos los voluntarios deben ser graduados de la escuela secundaria.

Bienvenidos a Project Cornerstone!

El programa Project Cornerstonees un programa dirigido por voluntarios, basado en literatura que trata asuntos importantes como el respeto, la tolerancia, la honestidad, la resolución pacífica de conflictos, posicionarse en contra del acoso escolar y rechazar la participación en los cotilleos. Este año, aunque nuestro modo de actuar será un poco diferente, todavía planeamos dar lecciones y requerimos de padres y madres voluntarios que ayuden a que los niños conecten con estas ideas y valores de forma profunda. 

Necesitamos urgentemente padres y madres lectores en el Salón 8, Salón 12 y Salon 22A/C. Queremos que cada cachorro de Bubb se sienta valorado, empoderado, respetado y querido.
