PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Families,

Reminder that tonight is Back to School Night at 6:00 and 6:45!  It is important to attend to learn about your child’s classroom and our partnership through Distance Learning.  Zoom links were sent out by teachers.  Our office staff will also be available tonight if you need support logging on.  To register for my principal sessions, click here.  We will send the presentations home as well.

Next week on 9/3, we will begin iReady Diagnostic assessments for our 1st-5th graders.  (Kinder will begin the following week.)  These diagnostic assessments are an opportunity for children to show what they know.  Teachers, the instructional coach, and I use this data to make instructional decisions for grade levels and small group instruction.  

Some important things to remember:

*Teachers will proctor the exams through Zoom.

*Parents will remind kids to do their best and then allow their kids to show what they know!

*Make sure your child is using their district provided chromebook for the assessment.

Parents can monitor their child’s online activity using Securly.   Check the link or your email for more information about how to use Securly.  We have also been teaching students the BUBB way in the virtual classroom, which includes staying on the tabs and windows that the teacher has assigned to them.  Click here for the BUBB way in virtual school and some of the videos we have used to teach and rehearse expectations with students (use respect and be responsible in your learning space and use respect and be responsible in Zoom).

Finally, we are looking for parents to serve on our School Site Council and English Language Advisory Committee (ELAC).  Serving on these committees is a great way to have in depth conversations about Bubb’s commitment to student growth and achievement for all students.  Please email me for more information!

Attendance and Absences 

Even though we are in distance learning, we are still in school.  Daily attendance is required. At the beginning of the school day, teachers will have a Zoom check in meeting to take attendance and connect with students.

If your child will be absent and not able to attend Zoom instruction, please contact the front office by phone or email to inform the school of your child’s absence.

MV Parent U on Sept. 9: Increasing Student Engagement with Literacy

Join us on Wednesday, September 9 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. for our next Parent University event: Increasing Student Engagement with Literacy from Home.

MVWSD Instructional Coaches Karen Gordon and Natalie Gallagher will share several resourceful strategies for supporting reading, writing, listening, and speaking at home during distance learning:

• Easy activities to boost your child's reading engagement 
• Creative ways to encourage and support writing using four text types (expository/informative, narrative, opinion, argumentative)

• Fostering listening skills to be able to extract key information
• Cultivating speaking skills using academic vocabulary
• Tips to prepare your child for ELPAC testing

Welcome from the Mountain View Educational Foundation (MVEF)!
 
MVEF is a community supported non-profit that raises funds to provide a competitive, well-rounded education for every child in the district.  We rely on tax-deductible donations from parents like you to support our students.  

In 2020, MVEF-funded programs will continue but look a little different in our connected learning environment.  MVEF will fund: Weekly art and music classes from CSMA delivered online, science through Living Classroom virtual lessons, middle school science supplies, environmental education online lessons, and TechSmart Coding classes.  Specifically, to support connected learning, MVEF will also fund art supplies, instrument repair, elective kits, online learning resources, professional development for teachers in online teaching, and Student Wellness.

ELPAC Language Assessment
Mountain View is a beautifully diverse place where hundreds of languages are spoken. In some instances, children from households where a non-English language is spoken need additional help at school to become fluent in English. To make sure that we identify all such children, all public school districts in California are required to do an initial language assessment called the Initial ELPAC. (English Learner Performance Assessment of California).

A letter was sent out last week to all families with children who meet the criteria for the Initial ELPAC. The letter describes the rationale and details for the assessment and invites families to follow up with any questions they may have. Additionally, the following link is a helpful resource for parents/guardians to understand the test better and to help prepare their children.

A Parent Guide to Understanding ELPAC Initial English (also contains information about the Summative ELPAC, which is a similar test at the end of the school year.)

We understand that the beginning of the school year is a busy time, especially under these extraordinary circumstances. Based on current guidance from the California Department of Education, the Initial ELPAC this fall will be administered remotely. Details to come. Mentor Tutor Connection Volunteer Information Session - September 10th

You can change the life of a student!

Come learn about volunteer opportunities to Mentor high school students and Tutor students in grades K-8  in our Mountain View and Los Altos schools.

Becoming a Mentor or Tutor will add joy to your life and help a student in our local community to a brighter future!

There is no obligation to sign up as a volunteer.  You're welcome to just come and learn more about they we do.

Please note: Mentor Tutor programs are currently remote and will remain so until students are back in school and the school district permits volunteers in the classroom

All volunteers must be high school graduates.

Meals and payments

Starting Aug. 17, paid and free and reduced price meals (grab and go during MVWSD Distance Learning) will be available at all school sites for students who registered last year for free and reduced price meals and the National School Lunch program, and full price meals will be available for students who have paid in advance online or have sent a check (including child’s school, child’s name, grade, teacher) to Food Service, Crittenden Middle School, 1701 Rock St., Mountain View, CA 94043.

Free or reduced price meal benefit status from last year can be used to pay for lunches until Sept. 30. We can assist new applicants in applying for free or reduced price meal benefits through the National Lunch Program and can process applications quickly.  The 2020-21 online application deadline is September 21, 2020.  No citizenship information is collected during the application process. Just as in the past, you will need to reapply annually.   Please go to the following website to apply online today.  http://www.ezmealapp.com (or paper applications are available at Gabriela Mistral Elementary School’s lunch service until Aug. 15). Meal payment:  Full or reduced price meals should be paid online throughout the year at www.EZschoolPay.com.  New this year: You must pay in advance online. No cash or checks will be accepted in person at the meal sites or school offices. No credit will be extended. Full price meals cost $3.50 for lunch and $2.50 for breakfast (reduced price is 40¢ for lunch and 30¢ for breakfast).

Welcome from Project Cornerstone!

The Project Cornerstone Program is a volunteer led, literature-based program addressing important issues like respect, tolerance, honesty, peaceful conflict resolution, taking a stand against bullying behaviors and refusing to participate in gossip. Parent volunteers read specially selected books, then lead discussions and activities that help teach valuable lessons related to these issues. Project Cornerstone has been a part of Bubb for eight years and counting. Normally, we would have parents visit each classroom to read the monthly lesson. This year, while our method of delivery will look a little different, we are still planning lessons and volunteer parent engagement and helping to connect kids across the whole school to these impactful ideas in meaningful ways.

We want to make every Bubb cub feel valued, empowered, respected and loved. Bubb Family Baking Night – Tuesday (Sept. 1) @ 6 p.m.

Grab an early dinner and join us on Zoom to make dessert. We’ll be making crepes with Bubb dad and pastry buff Ming Luke, who loves baking because “not only do you feel the accomplishment of creating something, but you get to eat your accomplishments too!”

As a side hobby to being a musician, Ming took pastry lessons with a Napa pastry chef and loves pastry art, from chocolate roses to French apple tarts to glass sugar sculpting. Now since music performances are currently cancelled, there is a lot more time for baking.

Evaluación del idioma ELPAC
Mountain View es un lugar maravillosamente diverso donde se hablan cientos de idiomas. En algunos casos, los niños de hogares donde se habla un idioma que no es el inglés necesitan ayuda adicional en la escuela para dominar el inglés. Para asegurarnos de identificar a todos esos niños, todos los distritos escolares públicos de California deben realizar una evaluación inicial del idioma llamada ELPAC inicial. Se envió una carta la semana pasada a todas las familias con niños que cumplen con los criterios para el ELPAC inicial. Comidas y pagos

A partir del 17 de agosto, las comidas pagadas y gratuitas y a precio reducido (para recoger y llevar durante el aprendizaje a distancia MVWSD) estarán disponibles en todos los campus escolares para los estudiantes que se inscribieron el año pasado para comidas gratuitas y de precio reducido y en el programa Nacional de Almuerzos Escolares, y también los de precio completo. Para los de precio completo las comidas estarán disponibles para los estudiantes que hayan pagado por adelantado en línea o hayan enviado un cheque (incluyendo la escuela del niño, el nombre del niño, el grado, y nombre del maestro) al Servicio de Alimentos, Crittenden Middle School, 1701 Rock St., Mountain View, CA 94043.

El estado de beneficio de comida gratuita o a precio reducido del año pasado se puede utilizar para pagar los almuerzos hasta el 30 de septiembre.  Podemos ayudar a los nuevos solicitantes a solicitar beneficios de comidas gratuitas o de precio reducido a través del Programa Nacional de Almuerzos y podemos procesar las solicitudes rápidamente. Bienvenidos a Project Cornerstone!

El programa Project Cornerstone es un programa dirigido por voluntarios, basado en literatura que trata asuntos importantes como el respeto, la tolerancia, la honestidad, la resolución pacífica de conflictos, posicionarse en contra del acoso escolar y rehuyendo la participación en los cotilleos. Los padres y madres voluntarios, leen libros especialmente seleccionados, y luego dirigen discusiones y actividades que ayudan a enseñar lecciones muy valiosas con respecto a estos temas. Project Cornerstone ha sido parte de Bubb durante 8 años y seguimos. Normalmente, los padres y madres visitan cada clase para leer la lección mensual. Este año, aunque nuestro modo de actuar será un poco diferente, todavía planeamos lecciones y requerimos de padres y madres voluntarios que ayuden a que los niños conecten con estas ideas y valores de forma profunda.

Noche de horneado familiar en Bubb : Martes (1 de septiembre) @ 6 p.m. 

Tomad una cena temprana y uníos a nosotros para hacer el postre. Vamos a hacer crepas con Ming Luke,  papá de Bubb y entusiasta de la pastelería, a quien le gusta cocinar porque "no solo te sientes realizado al crear algo, pero además puedes comerte tus éxitos!"

Como una afición aparte de ser músico, Ming tomó clases de pastelería con un chef de Napa y le encanta el arte de la repostería, desde rosas de chocolate hasta tartas de manzana francesas pasando por la escultura con cristales de azúcar. Ahora, como las actuaciones musicales están canceladas, tiene mucho más tiempo para cocinar.
