PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Families,

This week, we finished up the iReady diagnostic assessments in grades 1-5.  We will finish Kindergarten iReady assessments next week.  As mentioned in my last Principal’s check in meeting, we use the iReady data to inform our instruction.  The data may help us form initial groupings for small group math or reading instruction.  It also helps us identify standards that students have already mastered, as well as areas of focus during first instruction.  After we get to know students even better and collect different data points, we continue to refine our groupings and instruction.  I really appreciate the families who supported a growth mindset by encouraging their children to try their best and then giving them the space to take the assessment and problem solve on their own.

Some reminders and updates as we move into the 5th week of Distance Learning:

*Please have your child use their MVWSD Chromebook when doing school work. Why?  We use an application called Securly during school hours that allows us to see students’ actual screens in real time, push out URLs, force close tabs, and lock the screen to certain sites. This application only works on MVWSD devices.  It is much more effective for us to support your students when they use their MVWSD devices.

*Principal’s Coffee on Friday 9/11 @ 3:30.  Register for the meeting here.  We will discuss getting ready for reopening (including perimeter controls and registration), using Securly to monitor student internet use, attendance, and upcoming surveys.

*We are getting ready for Reopening, when it eventually happens!  We don’t have a timeline or reopening date, yet, but we are still preparing so we’ll be ready when the conditions are safe.  So far, we have cleared out some classroom furniture to allow for more space in classrooms, secured tons of PPE, set up touchless soap and hand sanitizer stations, created staggered lunch and recess schedules, and started to educate students about safety through our Monday morning meetings. You can always view our meetings on our Facebook page or through our weekly Dashboard. I am also currently working on a plan for arrival and dismissal that allows for physical distancing and limits non-students on campus.

Attendance Update

Due to new state guidance, beginning Sept 8, there will be some changes to how our school is required to count and monitor student attendance.

It’s important to know that school attendance during distance learning is mandatory. If your student will be absent, please report it by calling or emailing us as soon as possible. If your child is having difficulty with distance learning, please let us know. We want to help.

Changes to attendance monitoring beginning Sept 8:

·Elementary teachers will check in with students at the beginning of the day. Attendance will be taken at the end of the day every day, including Wednesdays. For middle school students, attendance is taken every period of the day, including Wednesdays.

·Students will no longer get a separate participation grade in Google Classroom. Attendance and participation scores are now combined and can be viewed by parents in Powerschool under “attendance history.”

· If you don’t report your student’s absence, your school will be calling you to determine the reason for the absence.

Distance Learning tip: How can I set sound alerts so that my student doesn’t miss a class meeting?

To have sound, Chromebook users will need to make sure their Google Calendar settings are set correctly. The instructions below will show how to change the notification setting.

- Go to the following page: calendar.google.com/calendar/r/settings

- On the left side of the page under "General" choose "Event Settings"

- Make sure the "Notifications" are set to "Desktop Notifications" and that the play notification sounds button is checked.

This should have the calendar play sound when events trigger.

MVWSD provides a tool that allows parents to be aware of their students' online activities and to help keep them safe on their school-issued devices. Securly allows you to see what choices your student is making online while at home so that you will be alerted to potential issues and can guide your student. Public hearing on Sept. 17: Sufficient instructional materials

A public hearing will be held in order to comply with Ed Code section 60119 on September 17, 2020 to detail the extent to which text books and instructional materials were provided to all students, including English Learners.

The definition of “sufficient textbooks or instructional materials” means that each pupil has textbooks or instructional materials, or both to use in class and to take home in each of the following subjects:
• Mathematics
• Science
• History/Social Science
• Language Arts
The public hearing on September 17, 2020 at 7:00pm will be held during the regular meeting of the Board of Trustees.  MV Parent U on Sept. 9: Increasing Student Engagement with Literacy

Join us on Wednesday, September 9 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. for our next Parent University event: Increasing Student Engagement with Literacy from Home.

MVWSD Instructional Coaches Karen Gordon and Natalie Gallagher will share several resourceful strategies for supporting reading, writing, listening, and speaking at home during distance learning:

Mentor Tutor Connection Volunteer Information Session - September 10th

You can change the life of a student!

Come learn about volunteer opportunities to Mentor high school students and Tutor students in grades K-8  in our Mountain View and Los Altos schools.

Becoming a Mentor or Tutor will add joy to your life and help a student in our local community to a brighter future!

There is no obligation to sign up as a volunteer.  You're welcome to just come and learn more about they we do.

Welcome from Project Cornerstone

TheProject CornerstoneProgram is a volunteer led, literature-based program addressing important issues like respect, tolerance, honesty, peaceful conflict resolution, taking a stand against bullying behaviors and refusing to participate in gossip. This year, while our method of delivery will look a little different, we are still planning lessons and volunteer parent engagement, helping to connect kids across the whole school to these impactful ideas in meaningful ways.

We still urgently need parent readers in Room 8, Room 13, and Rooms 22A/C. We want to make every Bubb cub feel valued, empowered, respected and loved. Estimadas familias,

Esta semana, terminamos las evaluaciones de diagnóstico de iReady en los grados 1-5. Terminaremos las evaluaciones de kindergarten iReady la próxima semana. Actualización de asistencia

Debido a la nueva guía estatal, a partir del 8 de septiembre, habrá algunos cambios en la forma en que nuestra escuela debe contar y monitorear la asistencia de los estudiantes.

Es importante saber que la asistencia a la escuela durante el aprendizaje a distancia es obligatoria. Si su estudiante estará ausente, infórmelo llamándonos o enviándonos un correo electrónico lo antes posible. Si su hijo tiene dificultades con el aprendizaje a distancia, háganoslo saber. Queremos ayudar.

Cambios en el monitoreo de asistencia a partir del 8 de septiembre:

·Los maestros de primaria se comunicarán con los estudiantes al comienzo del día. La asistencia se tomará al final del día todos los días, incluidos los miércoles. Para los estudiantes de la escuela intermedia, la asistencia se toma en todos los períodos del día, incluidos los miércoles.

Bienvenidos a Project Cornerstone

El programa Project Cornerstonees un programa dirigido por voluntarios, basado en literatura que trata asuntos importantes como el respeto, la tolerancia, la honestidad, la resolución pacífica de conflictos, posicionarse en contra del acoso escolar y rechazar la participación en los cotilleos. Este año, aunque nuestro modo de actuar será un poco diferente, todavía planeamos dar lecciones y requerimos de padres y madres voluntarios que ayuden a que los niños conecten con estas ideas y valores de forma profunda.
