MVLA Speaker Series Jeff Selingo Who Gets In the Why: A Year Inside College Admissions

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Families,

It has been so amazing to see our students adapt to this new learning environment.  I was going through the Kindergarteners’ Seesaw classrooms this morning.  It was so endearing and inspiring to see how they have gotten so independent with taking photos of their work, typing in their names, and responding to their teacher’s feedback-- their video explanations are fantastic and there are no grown up arms in the background holding up the pictures for the kids!

As I’ve mentioned in past weeks, we are getting ready for Reopening, when it eventually happens!  We don’t have a timeline or reopening date, yet, but we are still preparing so we’ll be ready when the conditions are safe.  In addition to the items I mentioned in the last Bulletin, teachers and staff also complete a self-screener before they come to campus and every staff member has now completed their first round of COVID testing.  We also reviewed the importance of proper hand washing in this week’s Monday meeting.  You can always view our meetings on our Facebook page or through our weekly Dashboard.

Stay up to date with what is happening in MVWSD with reopening:

*MVWSD School Board Meeting Thursday, 9/17.  Agenda and information to view the meeting are here.

*Superintendent Rudolph’s Community Check in Meeting Friday 9/18 @ 3:30.  Register for the meeting here.

*Bubb Principal’s Coffee Friday 9/25 @ 3:30 pm. Register for the meeting here.  Agenda to come next week.  Spanish interpretation will be available.

*If you were unable to attend last week’s Principal’s Coffee, you can view the slides here.   (Sorry--I forgot to record the meeting!)  If you did attend the coffee, I added slides to the end with questions and answers from the meeting.

Finally, some quick announcements:

*Our Bubb PTA is having a Fall Show-Off Showcase for kids to share new skills they’ve learned during Shelter in Place!  More information can be found on the PTA website.

*For students who participated in our Summer Learning Program (summer school): We reopened the Summer Learning Google Classroom.  Please have your child complete the Google Form assignment in that classroom to claim their Summer Learning prize!

Thank you for sticking with us!  As always, please email or call with any questions, input, or feedback.

In partnership,

Principal Cyndee

The MVLA Parent Education Speaker Series presents: Jeff Selingo on "Who Gets In and Why:  A Year Inside the College Admissions Process" on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2020 - 7:00 - 9:00pm | Live Online | Zoom

Join us for an insightful evening with journalist and higher education expert Jeff Selingo, as he dispels entrenched notions about the college admissions process.

While many have long believed that college admissions decisions are driven largely by merit, Jeff presents a more complicated truth.   Embedded in three distinctly different admissions offices — a selective private university, a leading liberal arts college, and a flagship public campus — Jeff closely observed college admission officers as they made their often agonizing and sometimes life-changing decisions.

Based on a year of reading applications and sitting through committee meetings where up and down votes were taken, Jeff reveals what really matters to the gatekeepers and how their ultimate decisions are often based on a college’s priorities.  Following interviews with students, testing agencies, marketers, and ranking organizations, Jeff also shares practical advice and helpful strategies for navigating the confusing, chaotic, and often-times stressful college application process.

Audience:  High school parents and students; teachers and counselors

Register: To register for this free event, go to https://mvla2020-21-jeffselingo.eventbrite.com

MENSAJE DE LA DIRECTORA

Estimadas familias,
