Principals Message

Dear Families,

All students in our district use Eureka math as their math curriculum.  This curriculum is very conceptual and focuses on the ‘why’ of the math and using strategies and problem-solving skills.  Because of this, the strategies and ways in which to problem solve may be different than what we are used to from our schooling.  So, the following is a helpful on-line tool to help your children with math.

What are the Eureka Math Digital Homework Helpers?

The Eureka Math Digital Homework Helpers illustrate problems similar to those assigned in class and demonstrate an example of the thinking that supports each problem. Theycontain similar, not identical, problemswith detailed solutions and thought bubbles to modelhow students might successfully think about the math in each example. The Homework Helpers are arranged in the same sequence as the student homework, making it easy for parents to follow along with their children’s progress.

How do you provide parents with access?

Here is a Digital Homework Helpers PDF guide containing instructions for accessing the resource.

Once you have the Digital Homework Helpers with the Product Key, what do parents do next?

  1. Login or Sign Up for a free Great Minds account
  2. Click on My Dashboard in the orange menu bar near the top of the page:
  3. Click on the Product Key button under Recent Resources
  4. Copy or enter the Product Key (8010H000001Y07UQAS) located on the PDF document and press Submit
  5. Click on the box that says Homework Helper EBooks K-12 (2019/2020) and press Select
  6. This will add the Digital Homework Helpers for Grades K-12 to the Great Minds Dashboard
  7. Click the Go to My Dashboard button and pin this resource to your Recent Items for easy access by pressing the pin located at the top right-hand corner of the resource

We also use Zearn as supplemental on-line math programs.  Zearn is directly linked to our Eureka curriculum and is used as a pre and/or post review of any Eureka lesson.  Your children know how to use the program.  Please ask them to show you how it works.

In partnership,
Principal Cyndee

My student is in school most of the time, so that’s ok, right?

Most parents are aware of what it means for a child to be truant from school. However, California is monitoring and working to reduce the numbers of students who are “chronically absent.” Students who are chronically absent typically attend school fairly regularly, but miss a few days here and there, which really add up and affect their learning. It's important to know both excused or unexcused absences count toward chronic absenteeism.

Chronically absent students have been absent (either excused or unexcused) for 10% of the time that school has been in session. For example, if your student has been absent 2 days before Sept. 15, he is chronically absent.  If your student has been absent 5 days before Oct. 20, she is chronically absent. An average of 2 days absent a month means a student is chronically absent. The District is now required to track this data and report it to the state.   For more information, click here.

CAASPP student score reports are in!
If your child is currently in grade 4-8, you may access your child's English Language Arts and mathematics scores through PowerSchool (https://ps.mvwsd.org/public/) After logging in, click on "score reports" in the lefthand column. If you are unable to access the Parent Portal, please contact your school secretary for assistance.

Mountain View Parent University presents a discussion and showing of “Like,” a documentary that explores the impact of social media on our lives and the effects of technology on the brain. Social media is a tool and social platforms are a place to connect, share, and care… but is that what's really happening? How can parents and students gain the skills to self-regulate?

Wednesday, Sept. 18, 6:30-8 PM at Crittenden Middle School Auditorium. Doors open at 6 p.m.

After the film, there will be a discussion facilitated by Common Sense Media and MVWSD staff. Spanish translation will be available during the discussion panel, and the film will have Spanish subtitles. Child care will be provided. To RSVP prior to the event, and to view live streaming on the internet during the event: mvwsd.org/parentu.

SELPA 1 CAC is here to help families of students with special education and learning challenges through awareness, support and education. www.selpa1cac.org.

The MVLA Parent Education Speaker Series presents: "The Orchid and the Dandelion:  Why Some Children Struggle and How All Can Thrive" with W. Thomas Boyce, M.D. on Thursday, Sept. 26, 2019 - 7:00 - 9:00pm | MVHS Spartan Theatre | 3535 Truman Ave, Mountain View, CA.

Developmental pediatrician, Dr. Thomas Boyce, will delve into results from four decades of research and clinical practice – exploring his major discovery that reveals how both genetic make-up and environment shape behavior.

Dr. Boyce will explore how the “dandelion” child (hearty, resilient, healthy) is able to survive and flourish under most circumstances and the “orchid” child (sensitive, susceptible, fragile) when given the right support, can thrive as much as, if not more, than other children. Dr. Boyce will share how we as parents can better nurture and support the unique characteristics of both types of children.

Mensaje de la Directora

Estimados familias,
