Principal's message

Dear Families,

Thank you for your support as we kick off the first week of Distance Learning.  We are enjoying seeing students in their Zoom meetings!  These meetings are a great way for students to stay connected with their teacher and their classmates.  Zoom PE also started this week for grades 1-5.  Beginning next week, teachers from the Community School of Music and Arts (CMSA) will also begin providing the music and art lessons that were originally scheduled for March, April, and May.  (Some classes had already finished all of their lessons prior to school closure.)  CSMA lessons will be through Zoom and prerecorded videos.  Links and schedule will be included in Google Classroom.

The Bubb Way still applies during Zoom meetings.  Please review these expectations with your child:

The BUBB Way on Zoom

Be Safe

  • Be patient in the waiting room until your teacher opens up the meeting.

  • Protect your classmates’ privacy--only the teacher can record or take screenshots of the Zoom meeting

Use Respect

  • Raise your hand

  • Talk when called on--one voice at a time

  • Dress appropriately for class

  • Use appropriate body language and facial expressions

Be Responsible

  • Bring any materials you’ll need

  • Come ready to learn and have fun

Be an UPstander

  • Remember collaborative conversation starters

“I respectfully disagree with _________ because _________.”

“I like what __________ said and I am still wondering __________.”

  • Be patient with your teacher and classmates.  Sometimes technology doesn’t work as we had planned.  Be supportive and kind!

If students are not following these expectations, teachers will redirect and reteach proper behavior.  If the inappropriate behavior continues, a student may be dropped from the Zoom meeting and then the parent would be contacted.

This week is National Volunteer Appreciation Week.  Thank you to everyone for all that you do to support all of our Bubb cubs.

As always, please reach out to me or your children's teachers with any questions or feedback.

In partnership,
Principal Cyndee

Free, low cost internet for students

We think that it’s important that each of our students has one Internet-ready device (laptop, iPad, etc)  in their house for distance learning schoolwork.  There are several ways you can access free/or low cost internet to connect students' Chromebooks. Please see the attached flyer or click on www.mvwsd.org/technology.

2020 Census Paper Questionnaires are on their way to Californians!
If you’re among the 70+ million households who have already responded to the 2020 Census, thank you! If you haven’t completed it yet, paper questionnaires are in the mail headed your way. Households receiving the paper questionnaire can still respond online or by phone, or they can return it by mail in the enclosed envelope. When you respond online, use the Census ID from the letter or provide your address. To respond now, go to https://go.usa.gov/xdKjk.

Please encourage your family, friends, and neighbors to complete it too. It’s something everyone can do while practicing social distancing at home to make a difference today, tomorrow and the next 10 years.

April Project Cornerstone Video Lesson

Dear Bubb Families,

Since we are continuing distance learning, we are trying to find ways to make our Project Cornerstone lessons accessible to you. Today we want to share our  video lesson for René Has Two Last Names by René Colato Laínez.

It was brought to our attention that we also could have sent the Spanish version of the video reading of the book René Has Two Last Names by René Colato Laínez.  If you would like to enjoy it with your family, here is the link:

René tiene dos apellidos

We thank the author René Colato Laínez, the illustrator Fabiola Graullera Ramírez and Arte Público Press/Piñata Books for permission to read this book for our lesson.

After the video, it would be great to read the parent letters for more information and other things you can discuss as a family. English | Spanish | Vietnamese

You can also take a look at the different naming traditions that Project Cornerstone has compiled. English | Spanish

Here are lots of cute ways to greet each other in this time of social distancing.

Activities you can do at home:

Be a Name Detective

Students can interview family members, by approved social distancing methods, to see if there is a story to how they got their name or why it was chosen for them. This promotes the child reaching out to others and being "an investigator". They can then share or present the facts on what they discovered with everyone they interview using a virtual platform, phone calls, emails, or letters.

Acrostic Poem

Have the student write their name vertically on a sheet of paper. For each letter of their name, write a word that they think describes a personal characteristic. Parents can do this for themselves as well for a family activity.

Cook it Up!

Help your student research and cook a dish from his/her culture or a food from another culture. Share what you learn with your family while eating a delicious new food.

Family Tree

Make a family tree like René does in the story or make a non-traditional family tree, that includes not only family but people who are important to you. Use photos, draw pictures, or cut outs from magazines.

Best,

Mónica, Carol, Jessica, and Shawn, your Project Cornerstone leads

Mensaje de las Directora

Estimadas familias,

  • Use lenguaje corporal apropiado y expresiones faciales
Sé responsable:
  • Traiga cualquier material que necesite

  • Ven listo para aprender y divertirte
Se un UPstander:
  • Recuerde iniciar conversaciones colaborativas

Nuestros mejores deseos,

Mónica, Carol, Jessica, y Shawn, sus líderes de Project Cornerstone
